Homeless shelter doesn’t have a home

A PROPOSAL to lease a building near Marina High School for the establishment of a homeless shelter was pulled from the agenda of the Huntington Beach City Council Monday night (Flickr/Hajee).

A proposal to establish a homeless shelter in Huntington Beach was stalled Monday night before the City Council could consider the matter.

At the request of City Manager Fred Wilson, Mayor Erik Peterson pulled the item from the agenda, citing “negative feedback from the community.”

The proposal was to approve a three-year lease for a 50-bed “navigational center” in an industrial area at 5770 Research Drive, northwest of Edinger Avenue and Springdale Street, a short distance from Marina Park and Marina High School.

The Ninth District Circuit Court, which is overseeing housing for the unsheltered in Orange County, is expected to give the city more time to find a more acceptable location.
