Homeless center again before HB council

Monday could be a long day for the Huntington Beach City Council.

The council will convene at 3:30 p.m. and the hot topic has been the plan to establish a homeless shelter – billed as a “navigation center” – in an industrial area of the city.

At the last meeting of the council, an earlier version of the plan for a site near Marina Park and Marina High School brought a storm of protest.

Mayor Erik Peterson pulled the item for the agenda, and what’s before the council next Monday is a study session on a proposal to establish a similar facility at 15311 Pipeline Lane, further away from the school and park. It would have 75 to 90 beds in the 11,200-square foot facility.

Two open houses were held on the proposal, on April 9 and 13.  No final decision is expected to be made on Monday.

The study session – which is open to the public – will be followed at 5 p.m. by a closed session at 5 p.m., with the regular meeting slated to begin at 6 p.m.

GGUSD spelling champs to be honored

Winners of the K-6 and 7-8 spelling bees will be honored by the Garden Grove Unified School District Board of Education when it meets on Tuesday night.

The classified employee of the month will be honored as well. Additionally, the board will consider appointments and re-appointments to the Citizen’s Bond Oversight Committee.

The board will meet at 7 p.m. at 10331 Stanford Ave. The GGUSD serves most of Garden Grove and portions of Anaheim, Cypress, Fountain Valley, Santa Ana, Stanton and Westminster.
