Vikes, Mariners move toward titles

MARINA and Pacifica clinched league titles Thursday in baseball and softball (Shutterstock).

Marina High’s baseball team clinched the Sunset/Wave pennant Thursday with a 12-5 win over Laguna Beach. The Vikings are now 5-2 in league and 17-9 overall.

Andrew Sojka had two doubles and three RBIs for the Vikes, while Rocco Peppi had four hits and two RBIs.

In softball action, Pacifica clinched no worse than a tie for the Empire League crown after defeating Valencia 10-0 in six innings. It was the Mariners’ seventh straight win, and their sixth consecutive shutout. PHS has now outscored its last six opponents by a combined scored of 52-0.

The M’s (8-0, 14-3-1) lead the league by two games with two games left on the schedule.

Julia Cabral pitched all six innings for Pacifica giving up four hits and striking out six. At the plate, Alyssa Canales went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.
