Trout hits one out, but otherwise ….

MIKE TROUT hit a home run Sunday but that was the only Angel score as the team lost 5-1 to the Orioles in Baltimore (Flickr/Keith Allison).

It’s still a (relatively) good day when you get beat pretty solidly but still manage to hang on to your position in the standings.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lost 5-1 on Sunday to the Baltimore Orioles, but their 19-21 record still puts them  – at .475 – in second place in the American League West, a few points ahead of the third place Seattle Mariners (20-23, .465). The Halos are 6.5 games out of first behind the Houston Astros.

Griffin Canning (1-1), who had an outstanding outing in his previous start, was less successful on Sunday. He went 4.2 innings and was touched for five hits and four runs. He walked four, struck out six and was tagged three times for home runs.

The Angel offense was mostly quiet, collecting just four hits and one run. That single tally came on a home run by Mike Trout in the third inning. It was Trout’s ninth homer of the season. He also walked twice.

On Monday, the Halos will be in Minnesota to take on the Twins (25-14). Tyler Skaggs (3-3) will start against Jose Berrios (6-1) in the start of a three-game series in the Gopher State that will run through Wednesday.
