SUMMER SOLSTICE – the first day of summer and the longest day of the year – is Friday. Grab your board – or hammock and get to work … or perhaps, play (Phil Gibbs/Flicker).

Coming up to the summer solstice – the longest day of the year is Friday – it’s a relatively mellow week. Let’s take a look.

WEATHER:  Mild weather this week. According to the National Weather Service, here’s the outlook, city by city:

MEETINGS: Huntington Beach City Council will meet on Monday at 6 p.m.  Top items on the agenda are hiring, and plans for withdrawal from the Public Cable Television Authority.

ENTERTAINMENT: If you’re going to go see a movie, the top pick in local cinemas shapes up as “Toy Story 4,” a Disney/Pixar animated film. Also opening this week are “Childs’s Play,” a horror flick, and “Anna,” an action flick.

If you favor live entertainment, “Mary Poppins” is playing Friday through Sunday at the Rose Center Theater in Westminster.

EVENTS:  Not in one of our four cities in The Tribune’s coverage are, but every close is the Fountain Valley Summerfest, planned for Thursday through Sunday at the Mile Square Regional Park off Euclid Street (south of Edinger Avenue). Hours are Thursday from 5-10 p.m., Friday 5-11 p.m., Saturday 2-11 p.m. and Sunday from 2-10 p.m.  Food, carnival rides, entertainment and more.

AND … More (at right) pithy words of wisdom about life in these United States …
