A special meeting of the Westminster City Council has been called by Mayor Tri Ta to address “divisive and damaging comments and social media posts” made by some council members.
The meeting will be held in the council chambers on Wednesday at 1 p.m.
The agenda item specifically asks the council to “discuss and provide direction” regarding comments critical of the dissenting remarks made at recent meetings of the panel, as well as those posted on Facebook.
The minority has accused Ta and the majority – especially Do – of trying to force a “totalitarian” regime on the council and accused them of conducting city business in a way that imitates communism.
Key points dividing the council are issues such as a code of ethics and conduct, as well as nepotism and a new policy approved at the last council meeting, which requires that in order for a new item to be placed on the meeting agenda, it must be initiated by the mayor or endorsed by a majority of council members.
The possibility of seeking to call a recall election to oust members of the majority is being openly discussed on social media.
