Like a pretty lady or a handsome man, the Willowick Golf Course site is getting lots of proposals.

In a joint announcement on Monday, the cities of Garden Grove and Santa Ana revealed that – in response to solicitations – they have received nine development proposals and three cash offers for the 101.5-acre site owned by Garden Grove but located within the city limits of Santa Ana.

The cities will work together to evaluate how closely the responses complied with the terms of the requests for proposals for the use of the land.

“Careful selection of a master developer for this landmark project, to insure that the unique needs, goals and visions of both cities and their communities are kept front and center,” said Garden Grove Mayor Steve Jones.

The proposals were due by June 28. According to a timeline posted on the city’s website, the proposals will be ranked, and the top 10 interviewed this month. A joint study session of the two councils would be conducted with the top three development presentations in “fall 2019.”

Following that, the Garden Grove council will meet for “review and developer selection.”

“Visioning” sessions held earlier at locations in Santa Ana and Garden Grove resulted in suggesting three options: a stadium, a mixed-use campus and an agricultural/low density project. But there’s no certainty that those are the only viable choices.

Additionally, the financial crunches faced by local cities could make selling the property – estimated worth perhaps as high as $1 billion – another option.
