Motel seen for downtown “Art Block”

The downtown area could be seeing its first motel under a proposal to be taken up by the Garden Grove Planning Commission when it meets on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Cottage Industries, LLC – founded by Saheen Sadeghi – is seeking approval from planners for a site plan and a conditional use permit for development in the area generally between Civic Center Drive on the west and 9th Street to the east.

This “Art Block Project” would include converting nine existing homes – one of them dating back to 1914 – and nine other structures – along with six new commercial buildings, to accommodate new commercial restaurant, office/service, retail and motel uses and the construction of an accessory trellis structure.

The motel use would include 10 building structures on five properties of the project site.

Also on the agenda are:

• expansion of an existing 119,836-square foot industrial unit at Knott Street and Acacia Avenue with a 43,335-square foot one-story addition;
• a variance allowing for the construction of a second free-standing monument sign for Orange County Emergency Pet Clinic, 12750 Garden Grove Blvd.; and
• a continued public hearing on a proposal to change four lots to three on a site at 9792 Stanford Avenue between Gilbert Street and Brookhurst Way.

The commission will meet at 7 p.m. in the council chambers in the Community Meeting Center, 11300 Stanford Ave.
