A 57-year-old bicyclist from Anaheim was fatally injured in a collision with a sports utility vehicle in Huntington Beach over the weekend.
According to Motor Sgt. Erik Warken of the HBPD, the mishap occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Friday and the cyclist was pronounced dead at about 1:31 p.m. on Sunday at UCI Medical Center in Orange.
The accident took place on Gothard Street, south of Heil Avenue. The SUV, a 2003 Ford Expedition, sustained front-end damage and the driver, a 34-year-old Huntington Beach man, remained at the scene.
The bicyclist was traveling on the wrong side of the road, according to Sgt. Warken, and was not wearing a helmet.
An investigation into the accident is ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed it, or has video footage of the area is asked to contact HBPD traffic investigators at (714) 536-5670 or (714) 536-5666.

The cyclist was wrong to be riding on the wrong side of the street… Ok, but there is no law requiring cyclists who are adults to wear a helmet. I don’t know why news reports “They were not wearing a helmet” like… that was why they died. Most bike helmets only protect you in a fall not a collision.
