THE CORONAVIRUS, an affliction of the respiratory organs, has led to worldwide quarantines, and is affecting sports schedules and other businesses and government operations (Shutterstock).
Developments nationally and locally in the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis:
- President Donald Trump Monday urged Americans to stay home and not venture out unless performing vital tasks. Groups of more than 10 are to be avoided. He suggested the outbreak could be contained by July, August or later.
- In the Bay Area, several counties have imposed a prohibition against people leaving their homes “except for essential needs” starting at midnight tonight. The order will be in place at least until April 7.
- In New York State, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has asked that the Army Corps of Engineers be called in to build field hospitals to deal with an expected influx of coronavirus suffererers. A curfew is also under consideration.
- South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa will be closing for two weeks, starting tonight (Monday) at 7 p.m. The cause was that one employee tested positive for the virus.
- Downtown Disney in Anaheim will close at 8 p.m. tonight and remain closed through the end of March.
- As of Sunday, the popular Azteca restaurant in Garden Grove was closed indefinitely. The nearby SteelCraft outdoor food hall was open for business Monday but customers were few.
- As of Monday morning, the number of coronavirus cases in Orange County had gone from four to 17, according to the county Health Care Agency.
- The national death total now stands at 70. The world death total is 6,610.
- The first experimental dose of vaccine has been tried on a patient. Even if successful, it may be months before it’s available to the public.
