UPDATE: State Superintendent of Schools Tony Thurmond on Tuesday said that California schools are likely to remain closed through the end of the academic year because of the coronavirus outbreak.

He did suggest that distance (online) learning could continue.

All local public school systems are extending the time its campuses will be closed because of the COVID-19 crisis.

The Garden Grove Unified School District is pushing back the date for the possible reopening of its campuses for another month.

The district has suspended in-person classes for students through Friday, May 8, with students returning – if conditions with the coronavirus outbreak permit – on Monday, May 11.

On Tuesday, the GGUSD Board of Education made that decision in response to what the district called “escalated national efforts to fight the spread of coronavirus.”

That action also empowered Superintendent Gabriela Mafi the authority to extend the school closures without further board action.

The GGUSD will continue its program of  “distance learning” following the regularly scheduled spring break of April 6-10. Free meals will continue to be provided to students at 13 locations on Mondays and Wednesdays through its “Grab and Go” program from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

School closures began in the district from March 16 through April 3. The spring break would have seen schools closed through April 10.

The GGUSD isn’t the only local public school system resetting the dates for closures and reopenings.

The Westminster School District is extending its closure until May 1.  In the Ocean View School District, campuses will be closed through May 1, also. The Huntington Beach City School District will keep its school doors closed through April 20, and the Huntington Beach Union High School District will maintain its closures though May 1. The HBUHSD’s own Grab and Go lunches will remain at Westminster and Ocean View high schools Monday through Friday from 12-1 p.m., except during the spring break (April 13-17).

At Golden West College in Huntington Beach – part of the Coast Community College District – the campus remains closed but online and remotely-taught classes resumed on Monday.
