The Westminster City Council will meet Wednesday night to hear a grim assessment of the city’s financial future.

There will a special study session at 5 p.m. and the regular session at 7 p.m. The first meeting will focus on the revised city budget for 2020-21.

The second meeting will cover such topics such as:

  • a ban on short-term rentals of residential properties
  • resolution in support of local nail salons and denouncing statements suggesting that the coronavirus originated from nail salons.

In a closed session at 6:30 p.m. the council will discuss the legal challenge by Khai M. Dao of the results of the April 7 recall election.

At the special meeting at 7 p.m., the council will be told:

  • that the coronavirus has reduced revenue and increased costs and that the fiscal year 2019-2020 budget is projected to end with a $1 million deficit.
  • that the revised 2020-2021 budget does not include any layoffs, but will be balanced through cuts, use of reserves and transfers from capital projects.
  • notes that if Measure SS – a one-cent temporary sales tax approved by voters in 2016 – is not renewed when it expires in 2022, the city will face a deficit of $12 to $13 million.
