The masks are off.  At least from a mandatory standpoint.

On Thursday, Dr. Clayton Chau, the new Orange County Health Care Agency rescinded an earlier order that residents were required to wear a face covering public, replacing it with a “highly recommended” order.

Requiring the masks sparked considerable dissent, and the backlash may have contributed to the unexpected resignation of Dr. Nicole Quick from the OCHCA top job.  Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said his deputies would not enforce Quick’s order.

“I want to be clear,” said Dr. Chau. “This does not diminish the importance of face coverings. I stand with public health experts and believe wearing cloth face coverings helps to slow the spread of COVID-19 in our community.”

The change in policy comes as many businesses and other public places are undergoing “re-opening.” There has been in recent days a sharp increase in reported coronavirus cases and deaths, although the cause is not clear and the trend is only a few days old.
