OC Sunday virus counts decline

ORANGE COUNTY coronavirus numbers fell after hit record highs earlier in the week (Flickr/Tim Darnell).

The count of new COVID-19 cases in Orange County took a break Sunday from record highs posted earlier in the week.

According to the county Health Care Agency, Sunday’s report showed 146 cases, a steep drop from the 540 noted the day before.

That brings the cumulative total to 12,608, which includes 1,131 at skilled nursing facilities, 395 county jail inmates and 111 homeless persons. Of that total, 6,988 are considered recovered.

Three deaths were reported, bringing the total to 326. That figure includes 170 skilled nursing facilities and two homeless persons.

Sunday’s report included some changes in several categories regarding hospitalization and hospital capacity.

Global virus deaths hit half-million

Johns Hopkins University’s counts of global deaths and confirmed coronavirus cases each hit landmarks on Sunday.

The total number of worldwide deaths is now at 500,321, with the United States still the leader with 125,768. The total number of confirmed cases is at 10,072,616, with the U.S. also first with 2,544,169.
