If you think law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for drunk or otherwise impaired drivers only this coming Independence Day weekend, think again.

The Huntington Beach Police Department will be conducting a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint somewhere in the city at an undisclosed location between the hours of 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 11 and 3 a.m. Sunday, July 12.

In 2009, the HBPD investigated over 1500 DUI drivers and numerous others involved in traffic collisions that claimed multiple lives and resulted in additional injuries.

The cost of getting charged with a DUI runs upwards to $13,500.

Funding for this checkpoint is provided to the HBPD by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A closed session will be held at 6 p.m. and a open session at 7 p.m. The open meeting will be held by teleconference/web conference only.
