The subject of the sale of “safe and sane fireworks” in Stanton will get further study.
On Tuesday night, the city council decided to direct city staff to examine the issue, do research and return with a report. The possibility of banning the legal pyrotechnics was first raised by Councilman Gary Taylor.
However, complaints from residents about noise, threats to property, annoyance to pets and combat veterans are continuing, and the use of “safe and sane” devices may make it more difficult to enforce laws against the sale and use of illegal fireworks, which are considered more dangerous.
Election season is now underway in Stanton
Three candidates have pulled nomination papers to run for city council seats in Stanton.
According to the city clerk’s office, they are:
- Dewayne Normand, seeking the District 2 seat.
- Hong Alyce Van (an appointed incumbent), seeking the District 2 seat.
- Carol Warren (incumbent), seeking the District 4 seat.
Candidates have until Aug. 7 to gather and submit nomination petitions with at least 20 signatures from registered voters. If an incumbent doesn’t file for re-election, the nomination period is extended to Aug. 12 for non-incumbents only.
