Term limits will go before voters

Voters in Westminster will get a chance on Nov. 3 to decide whether to impose term limits on people serving as mayor or city councilmembers.

The council on Wednesday night approved putting the matter on the general election ballot. Under the proposal, a person serving on the council in either position would be limited to a total of three terms, or 12 years.

Councilmember Tai Do said the point of having term limits is to “allow younger people to serve and bring fresh ideas” to the council and avoid having what he called “career politicians.”

The council met in closed session before the regular session, but did not conclude its consideration of the appointment of a new city manager. The council resumed the closed session after the conclusion of the regular meeting, but the session ended with “no reportable action.”
