President Trump hospitalized

President Donald Trump has been hospitalized at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Washington for treatment of COVID-19. The Associated Press is reporting that he is “feverish and fatigued” and will be in the hospital for several days, working from a suite designed to allow him to continue to carry out his duties as chief executive.

“I think I’m doing very well,” said the president in a video taped before leaving for the hospital, “but we’re going to make sure that things work out.” The White House characterized his symptoms as “mild,” reported United Press International.

In other developments, the New York Times is reporting that the president will be receiving an experimental drug treatment for coronavirus, and “negative” test results for the virus have been received by Vice President Mike Pence, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his wife, Jill.

Voting battle goes to the courts

Where, when and how you can cast your ballot in the Nov. 3 elections is the subject of several lawsuits and other court battles across the nation. According to the Associated Press, a federal appeals court in Georgia declared Friday that the deadline for receiving mail-in ballots will be Election Day, not three days later as ordered by a lower court. In North Carolina, a judge accepted a settlement that will allow more time to collect absentee ballots. In Wisconsin, the state Supreme Court will be asked to determine whether the state legislature can challenge extending the count period for absentee ballots until Nov. 9, as ordered by another court.

The news: Market coughs with coronavirus news

Wall Street caught a bit of a cold on Friday, reacting to the news that President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have coronavirus with some sharp drops in stock values. The Dow was down 134.09 points; the S&P 500 fell 32.36 and Nasdaq – a big winner on Thursday – fell the most, declining by 251.49 points. • Police in the Breonna Taylor case say they knocked on her door and identified themselves for a minute before battering down the door to her apartment, according to Kentucky grand jury recordings released today. •  The sending of a mass text telling U.S. Census Bureau workers to keep up their head count of all the nation’s residents was ordered by a federal judge Thursday.  She ruled that the Census Bureau’s Oct. 5 deadline was not in effect and threatened a contempt citation if not obeyed.

Weather: A little bit cooler, perhaps …

If you have been outside today, you know it’s still hot. A high of 97 was reported in Garden Grove by the National Weather Service, with a low of 65 predicted overnight. Still, that’s better than the 101 of a few days ago. Saturday should be slightly less toasty with a high of 92 (overnight low of 64) and Sunday even better at 89 (low of 64). In the coastal areas, things are a bit cooler. The NWS forecasts a high of 79 (low of 64) and a “frosty” 77 on Sunday for the Huntington Beach area.

Sports Tonight: Lakers beat the Heat, again

The Lakers are halfway toward another NBA championship with a 124-114 win over the Miami Heat Friday night. Their second win in the league finals was sparked by the tandem of LeBron James (33 points, nine rebounds, nine assists) and Anthony Davis (32 points, 14 rebounds, one assist).

Los Angeles led by six after one quarter and 14 by halftime and the outcome was never really in doubt. The margin would have been bigger if they’d shot foul shots better.

Miami’s Jimmy Butler scored 25 points, but most of that was 11-for-12 shooting at the free throw line. Kelly Olynyk came off the bench for Miami to score 24 points and grab nine rebounds.

Game three is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
