Economic stimulus hopes die

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced he was cutting off negotiations with Democratic legislators on a new economic stimulus bill. According to the New York Times, he accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of “not negotiating in good faith” and insisted that the Senate – where Republicans have the majority – put their energies into confirming his nominee to the Supreme Court. Pelosi fired back, saying that Trump was “showing his contempt for science, his disdain for our heroes.”

Earlier Democrats had passed a $2.2 trillion relief but Senate Republican leaders were backing a $1.6 trillion alternative.

More COVID-19 casualties emerge

Steven Miller, a close adviser and speechwriter for President Trump revealed on Tuesday he has tested positive for the coronavirus and was going into quarantine. He is the latest key White House figure to be sidelined by COVID-19, which also claimed administration spokesperson Kayleigh McEnany.  At least 22 people who have met recently with the president have contracted the illness.

Cancer was given as the cause. •  LouisianaState University is reacting to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic by loosening some rules for attendance at its football games. Fans won’t have to undergo temperature checks and can now buy alcohol in Tiger Stadium. •  White supremacist groups remain are the most “persistent and lethal threat” for terror in the United States, according to the Department of Homeland Security, according to United Press International. •  Wall Street is continuing its up-and-down pattern. After a boom day on Monday, all three major stock exchanges went south on Tuesday. The Dow dropped 375.88 points, the S&P 500 was down 47. 68 and Nasdaq 177.88. Marketwatch blamed the end to negotiations for another fiscal stimulus bill for the declines.

Weather: Cooler winds will prevail.

This week’s hot temperatures should start to break by Wednesday, with a predicted daytime high of 78, according to the National Weather Service. Thursday looks cooler at 75, and Friday 73. Sunny days and cloudy and cool evenings. Overnight lows in the low 60s.

Sports:  Lakers, Dodgers post wins

Lakers 102, Miami Heat 96 : LA took a 3-1 lead in the NBA finals Tuesday night with this win. LeBron James scored 28 points and Anthony Davis 22. Jimmy Butler had 22 for the Heat. The Lakers could wrap the title up with a win on Friday.

Dodgers 5, San Diego Padres 1: With four runs in the bottom of the sixth, the Dodgers took the first game of this National League Division Series. LA put together a sacrifice fly, a single to shallow right, and infield single and a wild pitch to score those runs. The pitching staff did its share, giving up just hit hits and striking out 14 Padres.
