Ban on bike sales in parks OK

An ordinance banning the repair and sales of bicycles and bicycle parts on public property was approved by the Huntington Beach City Council on Monday night.

Council members voted 7-0 on the second and final reading of the measure. In recent months there have been increasing reports of bicycle thefts in which the stolen bikes were sold – intact or in parts – by the thieves or third parties in city parks and other public spaces.

Also on Monday night, the council:

• gave recognition to retiring Police Chief Rob Handy
• approved a bid for $897,524 for construction of improvements for the Edison Community Center
• conducted a public hearing on acceptance of annual Consolidated Annual Performance and Evaluation Report (CAPER) for Community Development Block Grants and HOME (Home Investments Partnerships Program) federal funds.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the council is on Monday, Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
