New coronavirus cases reported in Saturday’s tally from the Orange County Health Care Agency showed a near-doubling of Friday’s figure. Deaths from coronavirus, however, continued to decline.

The OCHCA’s tally of new cases is at 316, up from 162 on Friday. Deaths fell from six to four. The number of people hospitalized with the virus fell from 162 on Friday to 159 on Saturday. Cases of COVID-19 in intensive care units went from 58 on Friday to 55 in Saturday’s report.

Public health officials caution against reading too much into daily tallies. The key metrics that classify counties into tiers is based on the twin metrics of test positivity percent and number of positive cases per 100,000. Each of those is computed using a seven-day average with a seven-day lag, and they are updated each Tuesday.
