Fletcher, Trout spark Angels’ win

David Fletcher’s two-out single in the top of the 11th inning lifted the Angels to a 7-5 extra-inning victory Thursday night over the Blue Jays in Toronto. Fletcher, who ended up with two hits and three RBIs for the game, stroked a line drive single to center, scoring Justin Upton and Jose Iglesias.

The win improved the Halo record to 5-2, one game behind the Houston Astros in the American League West.

Also starring at the plate for the Orange County team was Mike Trout with three hits, two runs scored and one RBI on a third-inning solo home run. He ended the night with seven total bases.

Griffin Canning had a mixed start. He worked 5.1 innings, giving up three hits and four earned runs. He was touched twice for homers, struck out seven batters and walked one. The win went in relief to Junior Guerra (2-0).

Raisel Iglesias got his second save of the season by striking out the side in the bottom of the 11th.

The Angels will take on the Blue Jays Friday in the second game of a three-game series.

Lakers can’t stand the Heat in Miami

The Lakers lost a halftime lead and went on fall 110-104 to the Miami Heat on the road.  Jimmy Butler scored 28 points for the winners, who saw their record improve to 27-25. The Lakers, who got 28 points from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, are now 32-30.

That’s fifth place in the NBA Western Conference and third place in the Pacific Division.

Next up for LAL is a game Saturday on the road against the Brooklyn Nets.

Clippers cool off the Suns at Staples

Paul George and Kawhi Leonard combined for 60 points Thursday night as the Clippers outshone the Phoenix Suns 113-103 at Staples Center. George had 33 points along with seven rebounds and two assists. Leonard scored 27 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists.

The Clips, winners of three straight, are now 35-18 and in third place in the NBA Western Conference and Pacific Division. They’re next in action Sunday hosting the Detroit Pistons.

Mariners defeat Cypress, 26-21, tie for 1st

The Pacifica High football team upset a previously unbeaten Cypress squad 26-21 Thursday night to knot up the Empire League race with one week to go. The Mariners are now 3-3 overall and 3-1 in league action, tied with the Centurions (3-1, 3-1) and Tustin (3-2, 3-1), which defeated Kennedy 33-14 Thursday.

Darius Cowens passed for 245 yards and two touchdowns fore the M’s.

Also Thursday night, Marina defeated Katella 21-6 in a Big 4 League game. Jack Miller has three TD passes in the win. If Garden Grove defeats Segerstrom Friday night, that will mean the Vikings (4-1, 2-0) have clinched no worse than a tie for the league crown.

On Wednesday, Magnolia edged Century 29-28 to square the Sentinels’ overall record at 2-2. They are also 2-2 in Orange League play. They’ll close out the schedule on April 15 against Savanna High.
