Eight are killed at FedEx facility

An ex-employee at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis shot and killed eight people today and then killed himself.

According to the Associated Press, the shooter was identified by police as Brandon Scott Hole, 19. The eight victims ranged in age from 19 to 74. Four of them were Sikhs, a religious group centered in India.

The AP is reporting that the shooter’s mother warned authorities last year that her son might try to commit “suicide by cop.” He was questioned by FBI agents, who decided no crime had been committed.

On Friday, he fired on people in the parking lot with a rifle, killing four.  He then entered the building and shot four more before shooting himself. At least seven others were wounded.

It was the eighth mass shooting to take place in the United States this year.

News: Biden changes course on refugees

President Joe Biden will increase the number of refugees allowed to settle in the U.S. That announcement came hours after Biden said he would maintain an earlier cap of 15,000 a year that had been in place in the Trump administration.

USA Today reports that the shift comes after sharp criticism from Democratic allies in Congress and immigrant rights groups.

Business: Wall Street’s good mood

Buoyed by recent good news on employment and sales in the retail and restaurant trades, the major stock markets had a second good day on Friday. The Dow set another new record, rising 164.68 points to 34,200.67. The S&P 500 gained 15.05 points to 4,185.47 and the Nasdaq was up 13.58 points to 14,052.34.

Sports: Another postponement for Tokyo?

The possibility of postponing – or cancelling – the Tokyo Summer Olympics was raised again on Wednesday. The games, originally planned for 2020, were pushed back to 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Sports Illustrated, an article published in the British Medical Journal by a Japanese writer, questioned whether the games should go on.

New case of the coronavirus are spiking in Japan. Holding the games in the midst of a health crisis “is contradictory to Japan’s commitment to global health and human security” wrote Kazuki Shimizu.

Weather: Clouds, sun, wind

Partly cloudy skies will continue through Saturday in the West Orange County area, then sunny and as hot as 90 on Sunday and 85 on Monday. A wind advisory is in effect from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with northwest winds of 20 to 25 miles an hour, with gusts of 45 to 50 degrees possible. In coastal areas of Huntington Beach, highs should be about four degrees cooler.
