Traffic jams on courts, fields

A LOT OF SPORTS are being condensed in a short period of time (Shutterstock).

The spring of 2021 might be described as the Season of the Big Traffic Jam. That refers not to cars and freeways, but instead to trying to cram two seasons’ worth of high school athletics into a couple of months.

Our update on that starts with the CIF-SS polls as released on Monday. We note the top-ranked team in each division for which we have local schools – Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster – listed, and those local schools that made the list.

Who’s who in hoops?

The confusion that the pandemic caused to prep sports has especially affected the basketball scene. So many games have been cancelled, rescheduled or just left in limbo.

Of the 16 high schools that serve the communities of Garden Grove, Huntington Beach, Stanton and Westminster, the teams have played as many as nine games so far, and as few as one.

Acknowledging the difficulty in trying to keep track of all that, here’s a wild guess at which are the strongest boys’ and girls’ teams … so far.

Boys will be boys …

Three teams have six wins. Edison is 6-3 and 1-0 in the Sunset League. Marina is 6-3 and 0-1 in the Wave League. Santiago is 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Garden Grove League. Five game-winners are Orange (5-5) and Pacifica (5-3).

Girls night out

Huntington Beach stands alone with an 8-0 record (1-0 in the Sunset League). Not far behind is Santiago (7-2, 2-0 in the Garden Grove League). With four wins are Edison (4-4) and Ocean View (4-3).

“Prep Sport Spotlight” is posted on Tuesdays during the high school athletic year. Coaches, players, parents and fans are encouraged to send news, photos, stats, etc. to us at orangecountytribune@gmail.com .
