Pride flag hoisted on Saturday

The rainbow flag of the LGBTQ community will be raised at three locations in Huntington Beach on Saturday morning in observance of Harvey Milk Day.

Milk was a pioneer for gay rights and was elected to the San Francisco city and county board of supervisors. He was fatally shot in 1978, along with Mayor George Moscone, by Dan White.

The ceremony will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Civic Center, 2000 Main St. (at Yorktown Avenue), and will feature remarks by Mayor Kim Carr, Councilmember Dan Kalmick and others who support the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and “queer” community.

Following the event at the civic center, the rainbow flag will be raised at the municipal pier, Central Library and senior center at Central Park. The flags will be flown throughout June in honor of LGBTQ Pride Month.

The city council on May 3 voted to authorize the flying of the flag. Several other cities, such as Anaheim and Irvine will also be raising the banner.
