Cuomo faces impeachment

If embattled New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo doesn’t resign his post after an investigation marked him as a serial sexual harasser of women, the state Assembly appears to be ready to start impeachment proceedings against him.

According to the Associated Press, a majority of members there would back the beginning of the process to remove him from office.

A report issued by the state attorney general on Tuesday found that Cuomo, a Democrat, had harassed 11 or more women during his tenure as New York’s chief executive. Cuomo has denied the charges.

President Joe Biden has called for Cuomo to step down, and other prominent political leaders of both parties have echoed that demand.

If the Assembly votes to impeach, the matter would then go to the state Senate for a final verdict.

Coronavirus infections pass 200 million

The number of people who have contracted the coronavirus worldwide is now at 200,046,509, according to the count of the Johns Hopkins University. Deaths are at 4,253,059.

In the United States, total cases are at 35,314,746, with 614,769 deaths. India has 31.8 million cases with 425,000 deaths, and Brazil with almost 20 million cases and 558,000 deaths.

Also on Wednesday, the director of the World Health Organization asked for a pause in booster shots for the COVID-19 vaccine in order to provide the inoculations to people in poorer countries.

According to USA Today, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus wants the moratorium at least until the end of September. His goal is to provide vaccinations for at least 10 percent of the people in every nation.

China, U.S. each leading a medal race

Like two athletes in different races, the leaders in two categories of medals in the Tokyo Olympics are maintaining their leads.

In the overall count of medals (as of 3 p.m. our time) the Americans remain in front with 79. They’re followed by the Chinese with 70 and the British with 48. In fourth is Japan with 40 and Australia with 36.

But regarding the first-place gold medals, China has the upper hand with 32, followed by the U.S. with 25, Japan in third with 21 and Great Britain and Australia tied for fourth with 14 each.

• The U.S. women’s basketball team defeated Australia 79-55 in a quarterfinal game to advance to the semifinals on Friday against Serbia.
• The U.S. baseball team defeated the Dominican Republic 3-1 to advance to the semifinals against South Korea on Thursday.
