A person described only as a “male subject” died at an area hospital after being taken into custody by Garden Grove police Wednesday night.

According Detective Sgt. Evan Beresford, police officers responded to a report of an attempted break-in at the door of a closed business in the 9500 block of Chapman Avenue around 9:55 p.m.

Arriving officers found the suspect – who matched the description given by the calling party – lying down in front of the closed business.

Concluding that he was trying to harm himself, officers handcuffed him. Orange County Fire Authority personnel responded to the scene to treat his “self-inflicted injuries” and transported him to a local hospital where he died.

The GGPD is treating the incident as an “in custody death” and the Orange County District Attorney’s office is conducting an independent investigation.

Personal information about the decedent is being withheld pending notification of his family. Witnesses with information about the incident are asked to contact the GGPD at (714) 741-5818.

  1. If it’s the same guy, he used to bang his head and yell over in the Food for Less shopping area, over by where Brewster’s Ice Cream is. It was painful to watch. He acted possessed. People called on him often. Sad. I guess, problem solved. This. Fentanyl. They never get covid. But for some, death is the answer. 💔💧🥀🦋
