Judge blocks abortion lawsuit

A new highly restrictive abortion law in Texas –  considered the toughest in the nation – as already run into its first legal obstacle.

According to United Press International, a Travis County judge has issued a temporary restraining order against Texas Right to Life, which was seeking to implement the new law’s provisions for private individuals or groups to sue abortion providers and anyone who assists a woman in getting an abortion.

No exceptions are made for rape or incest.

The law, signed into law this week by Gov. Greg Abbot, banned the termination of pregnancy when a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically at the six-week stage.

Judge Maya Guerra Gamble ruled that Planned Parenthood faced “probable, irreparable and imminent injury” if the lawsuit was allowed.

U.S. may fund aid to Afghanistan

The United States is likely willing to help finance humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan, but not directly to the Taliban regime that has seized control of the nation.

According to Reuters.com, anonymous congressional aides have said that lawmakers of both parties have expressed support for aid to refugees in that country as long as the funding goes through the United Nations or other agencies.

A condition for that aid might be the safe departure of all Americans and their Afghan allies from the country.

Despite their military success, the Taliban is reportedly struggling with the burdens of trying to create a government and provide services for the public.

Sports: Dodgers beat Giants, UCLA stuns LSU

The two area Major League Baseball teams each won games Saturday that put them where they wanted to be.

The Dodgers defeated the Giants in San Francisco 6-1 to square their crucial series at one win each, and knotted up the National League West lead with both teams at 86-50.

Trea Turner and Corey Seager each homered for the Blue Crew. Julio Urias (16-3) pitched 5.2 strong innings, giving up eight hits but just one run. He struck out eight batters and walked none.

With their 4-1 win in Anaheim, the Angels improved their record to .500 (68-68). Shohei Ohtani hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, notching his 43rd round-tripper of the season.

Jose Suarez (6-7) worked a complete game, yielding five hits and one earned run. He struck out eight and walked one.

In college football on Saturday, USC opened its season with a 30-7 win over San Jose State (now 1-1) at the Coliseum.  Kedon Slovis threw for 263 yards and two touchdowns for the Trojans.

UCLA (2-0) upset LSU (0-1) by the score of 38-27 at the Rose Bowl. Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 260 yards and three scores, and Zach Charbonnet ran for 117 yards and a TD as the Bruins defeated the nation’s 16th-ranked team.

Weather: The heat beat goes on

Temperatures in the West Orange County area will remain warm and sunny through the Labor Day weekend. According to weather.com, Saturday’s high peaked at 93 degrees and the thermometer will subside to 90 degrees on Sunday and then 84 on Monday. In coastal Huntington Beach, daily highs should be about seven to eight degrees cooler.
