Gunman kills four in Florida

A gunman killed four people in Florida Sunday, including a woman holding her baby.

According to the Associated Press, the suspect arrested is Bryan Riley, 33, a Marine Corps veteran who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Dead are a 33-year-old mother (shot while cradling her 3-month-old son, who was also killed), the infant’s 62-year-old grandmother and a 40-year-old man who police say was simply walking by the house in Lakeland.

Wounded but surviving was an 11-year-old girl who was shot seven times.

Riley did not appear to have any relationship with the family he attacked and may have simply chosen the home at random. Police say the suspect was having mental health problems and reportedly told his girlfriend he was getting messages from God.

Riley surrendered after a gun battle with law enforcement officers. He had been shot once.

Hurricane Larry could be another danger

Another major storm is moving across the Atlantic Ocean and threatens to lash the East Coast with high tides and heavy surf.

According to USA Today, Hurricane Larry is blowing winds of 130 to 156 miles an hour and may approach Bermuda, but is expected not to hit the U.S. coast directly. It nevertheless could cause more problems for the area ravaged by the remnants of Hurricane Ida earlier this week as it faded slowly on its path across southern and eastern parts of the nation.

However, the winds could power what Accuweather.com is saying is “likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” by midweek.

Sports: Giants win battle for first

The San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-4 Sunday to reclaim the lead in the National League West. Former Angel Albert Pujols had a pinch-hit two-run home run in the ninth to get the Blue Crew closer, but not close enough.

The Dodgers had tied with the Giants (each at 86-50) with a 6-1 win on Saturday. This is the last time the two rivals will meet in the regular season schedule. (The final results of today’s game will be posted later).

On Monday the Dodgers will back in action starting a series with the Cardinals in St. Louis.

In Anaheim, the Angels lost to the Texas Rangers 7-3 at the Big A Sunday. The Angels (now 68-69) had made it back to .500 Saturday with a 4-1 victory. The two teams will meet again on Monday at 6:07 p.m.

The AP college football rankings for the week won’t be released until Monday evening because of the Labor Day holiday, but ESPN isn’t waiting.

Alabama (1-0) is ranked at the top, followed by Georgia (1-0), Ohio State (1-0), Oklahoma (1-0) and Texas A&M (1-0) in the top five. Of special interest to Southern California fans is that the USC Trojans (1-0) are rated 12th after beating San Jose State 30-7 on Saturday, and UCLA (2-0) checks in at 16th after a 38-27 upset win Saturday over LSU. The Tigers (0-1) fell to 19th.

Weather: Cooler but still warm

Temperatures in the West Orange County area should get cooler on Monday and Tuesday, before resuming an upward march. According to Weather.com, Monday’s high is expected to be 86 degrees (overnight low of 68), and Tuesday’s at 85 (66). But after that, things will heat up, rising to 92 by Friday.

In the coastal area of Huntington Beach, daily highs will be seven to eight degrees cooler.
