Jan. 6 documents release OK’d

The release of presidential documents sought by a congressional committee looking into the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol was authorized by the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

In an unsigned opinion, the high court rejected an effort by former president Donald Trump to keep the documents from a committee of the House of Representatives, according to The Associated Press. The panel is seeking to discover what role Trump or his staff may have had in inciting the storming of the seat of Congress, which was meeting to confirm the Electoral College outcome that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were elected president and vice president.

Trump has made unsupported claims that the election was “stolen,” and that he, not Biden should be president. Claims of widespread election fraud have been rejected unanimously by voting officials and judges.

Biden: Russia will invade Ukraine

President Joe Biden predicted that Russian troops will invade Ukraine after the apparent failure of diplomatic negotiations to head off warfare. According to The New York Times, Biden predicted that Russian President Vladimir Putin would make that move.

“Do I think he’ll test the West, test the United States and NATO, as significantly as he can? Yes, I think he will,” said Biden at a news conference on Wednesday. He later took the issue of an invasion head-on. “Yes, I think he will,” he said, adding that he thought Russia would pay a heavy price and Putin would “regret having done it.”

Sports: Georgia gets its quarterback back

The signal-caller who lead the Georgia Bulldogs to the national college football championship announced he would be back for another season. Stetson  Bennett will play his final college season this fall; he’s a sixth-year senior.  Bennett edged out Mater Dei star J.T. Daniels for the starting job and led his team to the final victory by 33-18 over Alabama. He passed for 224 yards and two touchdowns. He was named the offensive most valuable player of the title game.

Over the course of the year, Bennett threw for 29 touchdowns with only seven interceptions while completing 64.5 percent of his passes.

Weather:  Summer days are here again

Temperatures more common to June and July than January will continue to warm the West Orange County area through the weekend and beyond. The forecast calls for a daytime high on Thursday of 79 degrees (overnight low of 48) under sunny skies.

Friday and Saturday will be bit cooler with highs of 71 and 73, but the sunny skies should persist almost to the end of the month.

Finance/Business:  Market “corrections” continue

Still reflecting worries about inflation and possible increases in interest rates, Wall Street was in negative territory again after the closing bell. The Dow Jones 30 Industrial closed down 339.82 points to end the day at 35,028.65. The S&P 500 dropped 44.35 points to 4,532.35 and the Nasdaq fell 166.64 to 14,340.26.
