Argonaut boys clinch title tie

GARDEN GROVE High’s boys’ basketball team clinched no worse than a tie for the Golden West League title with a win over Godinez Fundamental on Friday (Shutterstock).

After Friday’s 58-37 win over Godinez Fundamental, the Garden Grove High boys’ basketball team is just one win away from clinching another Golden West League title.

The Argonauts are 7-0 in league and 15-7 overall. They can do no worse than a tie for the crown on Monday when they host Segerstrom (4-2, 8-15). Grove barely escaped an upset on Tuesday, but managed to edge the Jaguars 55-54.

Against Godinez, Grove’s Miguel Ortega led all scorers with 22 points.

Ocean View and Segerstrom are tied for second in the GWL with 4-2 records. The Seahawks kept pace there by defeating Westminster 78-60. Ramon Lopez had 33 points for the winners.

Santiago remains one game ahead of the pack in the Garden Grove League race after beating Los Amigos 65-17. The Cavaliers are 7-1 in league, 17-9 overall.

Close behind in second with 6-2 marks are Bolsa Grande (13-8) and La Quinta (15-9).

The Surf League race is knotted up between Marina and Fountain Valley, each 3-1. The Barons (9-8 overall) tied it up with a 67-55 win over Marina (17-9) on Friday.

In girls’ play Friday, the Santiago girls’ team clinched no worse than a tie for the Garden Grove League championship with a 65-17 win over Los Amigos.

The Cavaliers are 8-0 in league and 16-7 overall. They can win it outright with a win Tuesday over Los Amigos. Loara is in second at 6-2 and 9-12.
