“Gun violence” bill is touted

A bipartisan “gun violence” bill is nearing approval in the U.S. Senate this week, according to The Associated Press.

Prompted in large part by the recent spate of mass fatal shootings, the bill is expected to pass both the Senate and the House of Representatives and be signed into law by President Joe Biden.

The bill contains measures supported by the Democrats and Republicans. For conservatives who argue that gun violence is largely a “mental health” issue, the legislation includes $8.6 billion on mental health programs and $2 billion in safety improvements in schools.

For Democrats who decry the availability of firearms, it expands background checks for those 18 to 20 years of age, prohibits convicted domestic abusers from possessing guns and would help states enforce “red flag” laws in which weapons can be used to temporarily confiscate guns from people who are considered a danger to themselves or others

Gas tax holiday bill before Congress

President Joe Biden on Wednesday urged Congress to act to suspend the federal gasoline tax for three months in an effort to relieve inflationary pressures.

According to United Press International, Biden also said he was planning to meet with oil refinery executives to try to persuade them to increase production to bring down the price of fuels.

Such federal gas tax “holiday” would reduce the price of a gallon of gas by about 18 cents, but would also cut the amount of money to repair and build highways across the U.S.

 Sports: Angels over Royals; Dodgers v. Reds

Shohei Ohtani struck out 13 batters over eight innings as the Los Angeles Angels (34-38) defeated the Royals in Kansas City on Wednesday night. The Halos remain in third place in the American League West, one game back of the second place Texas Rangers (33-35).

The Los Angeles Dodgers broke open a 4-4 deadlock with four runs in two innings to defeat the Cincinnati Reds 8-4 on Wednesday night.

The Blue Crew, now 42-25 and in first in the National League West, were led by Freddie Freeman who homered, drove in two runs and scored two.

Weather: Rain gives way to sun

The West Orange County had some light rain on Wednesday, but the sun should break through on Thursday. The forecast is for a daytime high of 88 with an overnight low of 63. Friday should be slightly cooler at 86 (63) but still sunny. Partly cloudy conditions are expected for Saturday with a high of 84 (63).
