The suspected gunman in a mass slaying in Monterey Park in Los Angeles County Saturday night killed himself Sunday afternoon.
Monterey is a suburban city with a large Chinese-American population. The motive for the shootings is still unknown.
German tanks may go to Ukraine
In what might be a break in the logjam over whether modern battle tanks should be sent to Ukraine, the German government announced Sunday it would not object if Poland sent some of its German-main Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine.
Earlier, some of the Western allies appeared to be waiting for some other nation to take the lead. The Leopard 2 is an advanced main battle tank and is widely used in Europe, but some countries are fearful of Russia’s reaction, according to the Associated Press.
Also in the news … Jeff Zients, who coordinated the Biden White House’s response to COVID-19 is believed to be the next presidential chief of staff, replacing Ron Klain, according to United Press International.

That means that the 49ers will take on the Philadelphia Eagles next weekend for the National Football Conference crown and the Kansas City Chiefs will face the Bengals for the American Football Conference title.
The winner of those games goes to the Super Bowl to be played on Sunday, Feb. 12 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Tuesday will be similar with a high of 65 (43). Wednesday should be mostly sunny with a high of 69 and low of 50. From there through next Saturday it’ll be more sunny days.
