What better way to break a three-game losing streak than to break a team record by the Los Angeles Angels’ hammering of the Colorado Rockies 25-1 in Denver on Saturday?

The 25 runs were a team record as were the 28 hits. The Halos scored 13 runs in the third inning and eight runs in the fourth to make it a runaway win, improving their record to 42-36. Combined with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ come-from-behind 8-7 win over the Houston Astros, the Angels moved into second place in the American League West.

Also, they rose into a wild card position.

Five home runs – surprisingly none by Shohei Ohtani – were hit by the Angels in the rout. Going deep were Mike Trout (his 17th of the season), Brandon Drury (13th), Matt Thaiss (fourth), Mickey Moniak (seventh) and David Fletcher (first).

As a team, the Orange County squad had 28 hits. Two players – Moniak and Hunter Renfroe – each went 5-for-5. Drury and Moniak each drove in four runs; Fletcher knocked in five.

Griffin Canning (6-2) working six shutout innings, giving up four hits and no runs. He struck out seven batters and walked none.

The two teams will meet again on Sunday with Tyler Anderson (4-1) making the start for the Angels.

Dodgers rally to beat Astros

A late rally lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to an 8-7 win over the Houston Astros at home Saturday night.

Trailing 7-3 after six innings, the Blue Crew scored twice in the seventh and three times in the eighth to improve to 43-33. The team is still in third place in the National League West, but just two games out of first behind Arizona and a half-game back of the second place San Francisco Giants.

The winning run came in the eighth when Johnny DeLuca scored from third on a balk by Bryan Abreu.

The Dodgers had three home runs, with Will Smith hitting his 11th home run, Jason Hayward his eighth and David Peralta his sixth.

Tony Gonsolin (4-2) will start on Sunday against the Astros as the Dodgers seek their fifth straight win.
