Halos lose heartbreaker, 9-8

After Saturday’s rousing come-from-behind win over the Houston Astros, the Los Angeles Angels came from ahead to lose 9-8 in Anaheim on Sunday.

The loss not only was a heart-breaker in which a 7-3 lead in the seventh inning wasn’t enough, but it dropped the Halos (46-48) back into fourth place in the American League West.

A four-run seventh inning seemed to poise the Orange County team for a second consecutive win over the Astros, but the visitors scored two in the eighth to get close at 7-5.

The ninth inning was the real heartbreaker as Houston hammered the hapless Angel bullpen – including closer Carlos Estevez – for four runs (including two home runs) and a 9-7 lead going into the bottom of ninth.

Hope was revived when Shohei Ohtani lead off with his 34th home run of the season to cut the margin in one at 9-8. Angel fans cheered lustily when the team got two men on with two out, but Matt Theiss lined out to end the game.

Overall the Angels were outhit 16-9 but got two home runs, one from Ohtani and Mike Moustakas’s eighth homer of the season. Trey Cabbage went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs.

The Angels will begin a three-game series with the New York Yankees in Anaheim on Monday.

Dodgers fall 2-1 to Mets in NYC

Held to four hits and one run, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 2-1 to the Mets in New York on Sunday, snapping their six-game winning streak.

With the loss, the Blue Crew is 53-39 and leads the National League West by 1.5 games over the surging San Francisco Giants, who have won five straight.

Luis Guillorme doubled to left in the bottom of the 10th inning, bringing in the winning run and a walk-off victory for the Mets (43-50). The sole Dodger run came in the top of the eighth when Mookie Betts singled in James Outman.

On Monday the Dodgers are in Baltimore to open a series vs. the Orioles.
