Kershaw wins 209th in 9-1 romp

Clayton Kershaw put his name into the record books while the Los Angeles Dodgers threw the book at the Arizona Diamondbacks Tuesday night at Chavez Ravine.

The Blue Crew beat the D-backs 9-1, sending them tumbling into third place in the National League West while Kershaw (12-4) picked up his 209th career victory with the team, tying with Don Drysdale for the most wins. Don Sutton has 233.

“It just means I’ve been here for a long time and I’ve been part of some really great teams,” said Kershaw.

He got some really great support in that victory. The team had 16 hits, including Mookie Betts’ 36th home run of the season – tying his personal best – while Will Smith added his 17th.

As for Kershaw, he went five innings and was touched for just three hits and one earned run. He struck out five batters and walked three.

With the win, the Dodgers are 82-49 and have a 13.5-game lead in the NL West. They can go for a sweep of the D-backs on Wednesday, sending Ryan Pepiot (0-0) to the mound.

Again, the Angels can’t hold a lead

They may not be getting to the playoffs this year, but the Los Angeles Angels may be close to setting a record for most blown leads.

On Tuesday, the Halos built a 4-2 advantage after five innings but were outscored the rest of the way 10-3 en route to a 12-7 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the City of Brotherly Love. The defeat puts the team’s record at 63-70, still in fourth place in the American League West. They’re also 12.5 games out of a wild card spot.

The Phillies hit five home runs off Angels’ pitchers, including a crushing three-run shot by Alec Bohm in the sixth inning to take the lead. The Angels had three homers of their own: Luis Rengifo’s 14th and 15th of the season and Randal Grichuk’s 12th.

It was the Halos’ third straight loss and their 20th defeat in August against seven victories.

Tyler Anderson (5-6) took the loss, pitching five innings and giving up seven hits, six earned runs and three home runs. He struck out three batters and walked three.

The Angels will try again on Wednesday with Reid Detmers (3-10) making the start.
