The recent summer “surge” in COVID-19 cases in Orange County seems to have abated, but the number of deaths continues to fluctuate up and down.
According to statistics announced by the Orange County Health Care Agency, the resurgence of coronavirus cases peaked with the weekly report of Sept. 6, which showed 1,706 confirmed new cases, which was the fourth consecutive week that cases topped 1,000.
The latest stat set from the OCHCA for the week ending Oct. 18 shows 530 confirmed new cases, less than a third of its highest total for 2023.
However, there were 19 deaths this past week, compared to 16 on Sept. 8 and three on Sept. 1. The number of cases currently hospitalized is at 80 and those in intensive care units for the treatment of COVID-19 is at 12.
To date, Orange County has had 739,816 confirmed cases of the virus and 8,380 deaths.
