Card had a history of mental health issues and underwent evaluations after displaying “erratic behavior.”

New speaker and the 2020 election
Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) is the new Speaker of the House of Representatives, and his elevation to that position has raised questions about his support for former president Donald Trump’s unsupported claim that Trump – and not Joe Biden – was the actual winner of the 2020 presidential election.
The allegation of widespread vote fraud led not only to many legal challenges – all of them dismissed by judges and election officials – to Biden’s victory in “swing states.”
Additionally, the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S Capitol was – in part – an effort to prevent the certification of Biden as the winner. The vice president at the time – Mike Pence – refused to throw out legitimate Electoral College votes.
The speaker has no role in the process, and the vice president in early January 2025 will be Kamala Harris, regardless of the outcome of the 2024 balloting.
