Former president Donald Trump is filing an appeal of a Maine legal ruling barring him from the presidential primary ballot.
That Civil War-era amendment blocks those who have engaged in “insurrection” against the federal government from holding office. In both cases, the conclusion is that Trump not only spread falsehoods about alleged election fraud, but encouraged those attacking the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 in an effort to prevent Joe Biden from taking office as president.
Legal observers have commented that the issue is likely to reach the U.S. Supreme Court for a final decision.
Japan death toll reaches 62
At least 62 people are dead in the aftermath of several strong earthquakes that struck Japan two days ago.

The western areas of that nation where the effect was the strongest continue to suffer aftershocks in the aftermath of the 7.6 magnitude temblor. Water, electrical power and phone service remain down in large parts of the affected areas.
Walls and entire buildings have collapsed. Roads have been ruptured and many people have been rendered homeless and – in addition to the deaths – there have been many people seriously injured.
Losses could have been worse, because Japan is located on a major fault line in the Pacific Basin and therefore, more safety precautions are in place.
Harvard president resigns post
The embattled president of Harvard University announced Tuesday that she would step down in the face of widespread criticism.
Claudine Gay, 53, is the first black president of the prestigious college and the second woman to do so. Critics claimed she was hired primarily because she met the requirement of ethic diversity.
Accusations of plagiarism were leveled against her academic work and she was also criticized for not initially responding forcefully to claims by Palestinian student groups blaming Israel entirely for the current war with Hamas.
During a congressional hearing, she gave this response to a question of whether calling for the genocide of Jews violated college rules: “It can be, depending on the context.”
Hamas leader killed in attack

Six people – one of them a senior leader of the Hamas militant group – died on Tuesday when n Israeli drone strike destroyed the building in which he was living.
Salah al-Arouri, 58, was the military commander of the West Bank. He was also deputy leader of the Hamas politburo. In his youth he spent 18 years in Israeli jails.
Eleven people were also injured and widespread damage, including fires, was reported
