A member of Israel’s war cabinet has proclaimed a deadline for the government to steer a different course in its conflict with Hamas militants.

Benny Gantz, considered a centrist, has declared June 8 as the date that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu must change direction or lose his support.

Gantz claims that the administration’s goals of defeating Hamas and liberating the hostages held by them have fallen short. He proposed a plan under which the hostages would be returned, Hamas would be scattered and an international pact with the help of America, Europe, Arab and Palestinian partners would administer civilian affairs in the war-ravaged Gaza Strip.

Netanyahu rejected the demands, calling them “euphemisms” for the defeat of Israel.
