HURRICANE BERYL is approaching the Caribbean area with “dangerous winds.” (NASA image).

What’s being called an “extremely dangerous” storm is moving toward the Caribbean on Sunday, which is expected to hit land on Monday morning in Barbados, St. Lucia, Tobago and other islands southeast of Florida.

The storm, now termed Hurricane Beryl, may bring “life-threatening winds and storm surge” according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Winds of up to 130 miles and hour are moving the storm toward land at about 18 miles an hour. After it moves though the Caribbean, it will head toward eastern Mexico by midweek, say meteorologists.

The storm is considered very early this time of year.

Biden’s allies rally, but …

Most prominent Democrats appear to be sticking by President Joe Biden after his disappointing performance in the CNN presidential debate on Thursday, but some are calling on him to step aside for another candidate.

Sen. James Clyburn (D-South Carolina) said “I do not believe that Joe Biden has a problem leading for the next four years.”

But Tom Harken, formerly a Democratic senator from Iowa, called the debate “a disaster from which Biden cannot recover,” reported the Associated Press.

Tough Sunday for LAA, LAD

All good things must come to an end, and the Los Angeles Angels’ six-game winning streak ended Sunday, but just barely. Trailing 7-1 going into the bottom of the ninth in Anaheim, the Halos rallied for five runs but ended up losing 7-6.

Zach Neto hit a three-run home run (his 11th homer of the year ) for the home team to draw the Angels to within two at 7-4, and Joe Adell  (13th) made it tight at 7-6 with a two-run blast. But that was as close as they got and the Tigers avoided a sweep after losing three times.

The Angels are now 36-47 and remain in fourth place in the AL West. After a day off, they’ll start a six-game road trip on Tuesday against the Athletics in Oakland.

Up in San Francisco, the Los Angeles Dodgers lost 10-4 to the Giants, dropping the series to the home team two games to one.

Starter James Paxton was tagged for 12 hits and nine runs in four innings as the Giants built an early 9-0 lead. Chris Taylor homered in the fifth and the Dodgers made it a bit more respectable with two runs in the ninth.

Now 52-33 (still in first in the NL West), the Blue Crew has Monday off and will start a six-game home stand on Tuesday, beginning with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
