An ordinance that would set standards for the sale of alcohol in mixed-use areas of the city was approved for first reading by the Stanton City Council on Tuesday night.

The vote was 5-0 for the ordinance, which would change existing city zoning standards that banned the sale of alcohol in residential neighborhoods. Mixed-use zoning allows for residential, commercial and office uses in the same area, or same building.

Also on Tuesday night, the council voted 5-0 in favor of extending by 10 months and 15 days an existing temporary moratorium on the establishment, enlargement or alteration of any new or existing medical services devoted to treatment of chemical addictions.

The intent is to give the city time to craft a new ordinance to curb possible “negative impacts.”

Finally, the council discussed the concept of a “social host ordinance” which would hold hosts of social events responsible for the possible misdeeds of guests. Staff was directed to proceed with research on such an ordinance and bring it back to the council for review at a future meeting.
