For the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night, it was a matter of scoring early and losing late. For the Los Angeles Dodgers, it was a matter of not scoring at all.
The Angels jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against the Oakland Athletics in Anaheim on home runs by Taylor Ward and Nolan Schanuel, but that was all the scoring they could muster.
Logan O’Hoppe had a good day at bat, going 3-for-4 to improve his batting average to .282.
The Angels will host the A’s again on Saturday.
Playing without Freddie Freeman – called away on a “serious family matter” – the Dodgers (62-43)were without much offense and lost 5-0 to the Astros in Houston.
Shohei Ohtani singled, doubled and walked – he’s hitting .315 – and Gavin Lux was 2-for-3, but there wasn’t much other batting prowess.
Dodger starter Gavin Stone (9-4) pitched six innings, giving up nine hits and four runs, including homers from Alex Bregman and Jon Singleton.
The outcome allowed the Astros (54-49) to creep back into first place in the American League West. The Dodgers and Astros will play again on Saturday.
