Despite being forced to play without star running back Julius Gillick, the Edison High Charger football team rose to occasion and defeated Simi Valley High 35-21 for the Division 3 CIF-SS championship Friday night at Sheue Field.
The green-and-gold were without their top rusher, but nevertheless prevailed by shifting emphasis to a passing attack. Sophomore Sam Thomson threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing score.
Samuel Edmisten added some ground offense with 80 yards rushing.
Gillick was sidelined because he had been tagged with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in Edison’s semifinal win.
It was the Chargers (10-4) first CIF-SS football title since 2016, and concluded a season in which they finished third in the Alpha League but ended up winning a division crown.
