Huntington Beach’s nickname is “Surf City,” and it’s home not only to many surfers and fans of surfers but also the International Surf Museum in the downtown area.
But as the popularity of surfing grows, so does the collection of the museum. A possible move to larger quarters will go before the Huntington Beach City Council when it meets on Tuesday.
The Museum is proposing to move from its present location at 411 Olive Avenue to vacant space a short distance away in the Main Street Branch Library, located at 525 Main. According to a staff report, Visit Huntington Beach, (a promoter of tourism for the city) “has indicated preliminary support and may assist in underwriting relocation and ongoing operational costs.”
The council will be asked to direct staff to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed move and return to the council within 90 days with findings and suggested next steps.
The city council will meet in its chambers on 2000 Main St. with a closed session at 4:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 6 p.m.
