The good news is that the Los Angeles Angels have found another solid starter for their pitching rotation.
The not-quite-as-good news is that the team’s hitting isn’t up to the quality as its throwers. Reid Detmers was a star for the Halos in their home opener in Anaheim on Friday, but the Angels lost 3-1 in the 10th inning to fall to 3-5 in the young season to the Seattle Mariners.
But Bryan Woo, his counterpart with the M’s, matched him more-or-less pitch for pitch, pitching seven shutout innings himself, giving up just one hit – a single by Oswald Peraza – and striking out six Angels.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the 10th when Cole Young tripled to tight, scoring Luke Raley. Two outs later the M’s scored again when Josh Naylor hit a line drive single that brought in Young and Julio Rodriguez.
The Angels did push across one run in the bottom of the 10th when Jose Soler knocked in Mike Trout, but it wasn’t enough.
On Saturday the teams will meet again with Jack Kochanowicz set to pitch for the Halos.
