ACCIDENTS and worse incidents are tied to e-bikes and e-motorcycles in Huntington Beach (Shutterstock).
The creation of an ad hoc city council committee on juvenile e-bike safety and enforcement was approved by the full Huntington Beach City Council on Tuesday night.
The vote was 7-0 in favor and the committee members will be Mayor Pro Tem Butch Twining and Councilmmbers Chad Williams and Andrew Gruel.
The committee will research current local and state laws regarding operation of e-bikes by minors, consult with the Huntington Beach Police Department on enforcement challenges and resource needs, develop recommended policy direction” and potential amendments to the municipal code.
The group will report back to the full city council within 90 days.
Huntington Beach has experienced an outbreak of accidents, traffic violations and other problems associated with electric bicycles and motorcycles, including one recent incident in which a group of underage e-bikers attacked a man near the beach.
Also, the council voted 7-0 to develop a program to encourage the proper guidelines for the display of the United States flag.
Additionally – on a 7-0 vote – the council agreed to discontinue plans to issue a request for proposals for firms to develop strategy, branding, merchandising, etc. for the city.
The next council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 2.
