Chemical leak spurs evacuations in areas of West Garden Grove

he release of fumes from toxic chemicals spurred the evacuation of an area of West Garden Grove on Thursday afternoon.

According to the Orange County Fire Authority, the incident was at the GKN Aerospace Facility in the 12000 block of Western Avenue. There were no injuries reported but evacuation orders were issued – since lifted – in the areas of:
• north of Garden Grove Boulevard;
• east of Monarch Street
• south of Orangewood Avenue and
• west of Beach Boulevard.

Street closures were in Western Avenue from Garden Grove Boulevard to Chapman Avenue and Lampson Avenue from Rosalia Avenue to Western Avenue.

The incident involved the leakage from a tank holding methyl methacrylate (MMA), a liquid typically used to manufacture plastic, including helmets for pilots in military aircraft.

A reunification center was established at Rancho Alamitos High school, located at Dale Street at Orangewood Avenue.
