The law about public engagement in government meetings is changing, and the Stanton City Council on Tuesday voted to keep up with the changes.
By a 5-0 vote, the council voted to implement certain actions required by state Senate Bill 707, passed by the state Legislature in 2025.
The new law expands and updated the Ralph M Brown Act. The standing requirement that all meetings of a legislative body (such as a city council or school board) be open to and public is expanded to allow “internet-based social media platforms to engage with the public in matters within their jurisdiction.”
It also relates to how “reasonable accommodations” can be made for persons with disabilities as well as the procedures when a teleconferenced meeting is disrupted because of technical problems.
Additionally, the city must take “reasonable steps to encourage participation by residents who have not traditionally engaged in public meetings, including outreach to non-English-speaking organizations.
