GARDEN GROVE and Pacifica met in an epic struggle at SoFi Stadium in 2025. They play again this week (GGUSD photo).
The “numbering” of the high school football season can be a little confusing. Last week was Week Zero, but there was a week of action before that. And one school – Edison – had a game the week before.
And some West Orange County area schools will be starting this Friday in Week One or Two … depending on how you count.
The rivalry between these two Garden Grove school district schools goes all the way back to 1966 and the establishment of the old Garden Grove League. Even after both teams left the GGL, they still met in early-season clashes.
This time, the Mariners will be the favorite. The M’s opened their season with an impressive 27-7 win over Beckman.
Grove (0-1) played another ex-GGL foe (Bolsa Grande), falling behind 23-0 but rallying in the fourth quarter with 12 points for a 23-19 loss.
The M’s are led by tight-end turned quarterback Joseph Pham-Ngoy, who rushed for two of the team’s three touchdowns. The Argonauts feature their second-year quarterback Calvin Keovphan, who completed 11 of 26 passes for 122 yards and one touchdown.
Here’s the lineup for this week’s area high school football. As always, the times, locations and even opponents can be subject to change without notice.
Check with the school for the latest. All games are scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
